Although these are still early days in IoT deployments, the benefits of fog computing are already coming into focus. As deployment scale goes up, so too does the amount of data captured and the volume can quickly become overwhelming. Depending on the scale, running security, local analytics and data optimization closer to the sensors can be beneficial.

Backhaul solutions for the Internet of Things are getting more sophisticated and Stream Technologies is a good example. Customers will buy connectivity from Stream to abstract their backhaul network so they don’t need to concern themselves with different mobile and satellite operators and their different contracts and pricing.

These are still early days for Internet of Things security. Mark pegs the level of security robustness at a 5 or 6 out of 10 for consumer IoT products and for certain segments, like IoT cameras, lower. We are currently feeling the pain of IoT product makers getting creative with security methods when they aren’t qualified to do so. This will settle down and the level will rise after a few years when best practises emerge.

There are three layers of standardization in IoT networking: First, to get the data off the devices, a wireless (and sometimes a wired) interface is required - this is the media layer. To aggregate the data from all these devices, networking is required – this is the networking layer. Then once the devices can talk to each other, the question is what they talk to each other – this is the application layer.

Although they are often named the same, the media layer of IoT networking consists of two separate parts: the radio to transmit the data and the protocol to exchange the data with the receiver. Important for many reasons including updatability. While the hardware can be in place for long periods of time, you can expect protocols to change every few years as exemplified by the 802.15.4 standard which is currently on version m.
